<p>This thesis represents a journey from human-caused degradation to human-driven rehabilitation, hand to hand with microscopic organisms revealing their valuable role for the ecosystem and human benefit. Overall, I have contributed to deepening our knowledge of important ecosystem dynamics while stimulating researchers to take the blinkers off and challenge key dogmas relating to wetland biogeochemistry. </p>
