This thesis is the collection of three essays that examine how individuals and households respond to a government policy (affirmative action), access to decentralized energy systems, and civil conflicts. The findings show that affirmative action and decentralized energy systems positively impact individuals' educational and labour market outcomes. However, civil conflicts negatively impact households' use of clean energy.
