This historiographical research investigates the sustainability of suburban Djilang and Geelong in different design eras using a 'creole' Australian philosophy and theory of landscape. It found that suburban Djilang was sustainable but suburban Geelong is not. However, with considered design the average suburban block size of 735 m2 can be retrofitted to sustainably meet environmental and human needs.
