Towering over all : the Italianate villa in the colonial landscape

The picturesque Italianate villa came to be ubiquitous in colonial Victoria. Melbourne's new Government House was a significant departure from the Gothic precedents in Sydney and Hobart. This shrewd choice drew on the model's local popularity and royal endorsement at Osborne House. It has come to symbolise democracy in Victoria.
