A study of the history of the public health movement in Colombia from 1492 to 1953 constituting a comprehensive analysis of the transition from the hygienist ideas and practices of European origin to the new North American paradigm of public health, incorporating the social actors of bacteriology, epidemiology and tropical medicine. Looks at both internal Colombian elements of this transition and international influences and interactions which informed the institutionalization of public health in Colombia. The investigation encompasses the technical aspects as well as the political, economic, social and ethico-religious aspects of the problem.
