This thesis explored the mechanisms that underlie hyperinsulinemia, or elevated insulin levels, in young adults. It found hyperinsulinemia was associated with increased insulin secretion, decreased insulin clearance, and abnormalities with cellular signalling. It also identified a novel state where some people only have high insulin levels after eating.
