Carbon fibre traditionally have a circular cross-section, this form of carbon fibre has provided the world with light-weight high-strength composite structures. This thesis has studied alternative microstructures and shapes, such as trilobal, hollow and bicomponent systems, which have the potential to create new families of not only low-cost but also multi-functional composites.
