WUNDERLICH

An Art Metal Ceiling of Recent Design

pJjj

1___, ili-J

r~T Ml

A Drawing Doom Ceiling, involving the Suite of delicately embossed panels shown on page 16.

FOR that feeling of restfulness and comfort, so much desired in the quiet hours of the evening, nothing is so essential as congenial surroundings. The Drawing Room is valued from this aspect, and our designers have given due thought to the creation of Decorative Ceiling Treatments in harmony with the requirements of this section of the Home.

Wunderlich Art Metal Ceilings will be found to embrace Designs suited to each and every taste. Whether for the Drawing Room or the least important Room of the Home, numerous designs are available from our extensive range, exactly suited to the purpose.

Nor is it in Design only that our Art Metal affords such complete satisfaction. In choosing this form of Ceiling Decoration, you ensure freedom from the thousand and one troubles that so often mar the beauty of the home. Our Material is permanent, it cannot crack or fall down, and it is proof against insect pests, borers and white ant.

More than this, our Art Metal is economical to instal; and the first cost is the only cost, because the Ceiling retains its freshness and charm of appearance over an unlimited period.

When you are building, be sure to insist on Wunderlich Art Metal Ceilings, and so enjoy the advantages which they confer.

A Ceiling of Deeply Embossed Panelling.

View of a Dining Doom Ceiling, illustrating the substantial yet truly artistic effect obtainable with a Deeply Embossed

Pattern.

WE find it possible, in this Catalogue, to show but a few illustrations of the Work we have carried out. Ceilings of intricate detail and extreme beauty, alike with those of more subdued design, are available in wonderful variety in our Art Metal; and endless examples in Homes and Buildings throughout Australasia bear witness to the completeness and artistic merit of our scheme of Ceiling Decoration.

It is not in New Homes alone that our Metal will be found so greatly welcome. Many a plaster ceiling or similar surface, cracked or stained by reason of its long years of existence, has been covered or replaced by a Wunderlich

Art Metal Treatment, whereby a new charm and interest in the Dwelling have been created. Considering the question of Ceilings from any aspect, you will find our Art Metal alone worthy of your Home. Even though you are resident miles away in the Country, our Metal will come to you in a form surprisingly easy to fix; and the transit charges will be a revelation to you, as Wunderlich ceilings weigh lighter than any other material for the purpose yet heard of.

If you desire the Home to be a credit and a delight to you, and a source of pleasure to your friends, make sure that the Ceilings are superior and distinctive. Adopt the ‘ Wunderlich” treatment.

WUNDERLI CH

A Ceiling of Elaborate Design

The Best Room in a fine Modern Home; showing a highly ornate Ceiling Treatment in Wunderlich Metal.

ABOVE we show an Art Metal Treatment particularly suited to the Surroundings. Not only is the Ceiling distinctive in Design, but it is ideal for positions such as here, where full enjoyment from a musical entertainment is desired; the acoustic qualities of our Metal being proverbial.

Notwithstanding its high merit, our Material is really inexpensive in initial cost, and even less costly in the long run.

It has stood the great test of Time, and is offered to you as a perfected Ceiling, unrivalled in its utilitarian and artistic qualities yet within the means of the most modest Homebuilder. In construction, Wunderlich Metal is simplicity itself. Each sheet is accurately stamped, with a register bead or button along each side and end, ensuring a close-fitting lap indiscernible to the eye. The material is primed with a coat of oil paint, which facilitates the final painting or decorating following its erection.

All this results in an impermeable surface, affording no harbour to insects and vermin, and constituting an absolute barrier to the spread of fire.

Withal, our Art Metal is strong and Durable, so that it is rarely we have an instance of damage in transit. What we illustrate in this Catalogue, you can rely upon receiving, true to pattern and perfect in finish.

Wunderlich Ceilings are well worth your patronage. We have had few dissatisfied clients.

WUNDERLICH

WUNDERLICH Art Metal Ceilings may be ordered in either of two ways, viz., (a) in Stock Sizes or (b) To design.

STOCK SIZES.—To order in “Stock Sizes,” our client should first acquire as much information as possible from our Catalogue relative to Wunderlich Materials. The next step is to make a selection of patterns for the various rooms it is desired to treat, and then calculate the quantity of Cornices (6ft. lengths), Sheetings (6ft. x 2ft. Sheets), and, if so desired, Mouldings (6ft. lengths) and Border Sheetings (6ft. long x widths up to 2ft.), which the job involves. The quantity of steel leaves and bosses, for the mitres of cornices and mouldings respectively, should also be ascertained. In arriving at these quantities, our client should take into consideration any waste which may arise in the fixing of the ceilings, and order extra material to compensate for this waste. When placing the order, our client should mention the quantity, catalogue number, and size of each pattern required ; on receipt of which we effect prompt delivery of the materials, in-

To ensure accuracy in the execution of orders and in the preparation of estimates, we ask our clients to provide us with the fullest possible information as to their requirements.

In every instance, we like to have a plan— even if only a rough one—of the work in view. This plan should show:-

The dimension of each wall.

DESPATCH.—Deliveries per our own carts or lorries are charged for at current rates. CASES.—We invoice cases at cost price, but make no charge for packing. Empty cases cannot be accepted, if returned to us, as invariably they are valueless.

INSURANCE AND FREIGHT.—When goods are sent by sea route, they will be insured by us, failing specific instructions regarding insurance; and the premium will be charged at current rates. We do not prepay freight unless under buyers’ instructions.

LIM ITT E.D .

Bmmiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

voicing at the “Stock Rates’ rent price list.

TO DESIGN.—The object of ordering "To Design” is to obtain the benefit of our knowledge and assistance; and new clients often avail themselves of this. Instead of calculating his own quantities (as in the case of ordering in Stock sizes) our client simply supplies us with a plan or measurements of the various rooms he desires to ceil; and, at the same time, tells us what patterns he prefers. We then forward a design, free of cost, showing the arrangement of the various ceilings; accompanying this with our quotation for the supplying (and, if so desired, the fixing) of the various materials involved. This quote works out a little dearer than “Stock Rate's,” as it covers all waste in cutting, also sufficient |in. x 16 gauge nails for applying the metal. When the work is entrusted to us, we prepare a working plan for the guidance of the tradesman who will be fixing the ceilings, and we supply the metal materials in accordance with this plan, allowing full and plenty for each room.

The face measurement and the depth of each projection, such as a chimney breast.

One diagonal measurement, should the room not be perfectly rectangular.

The distance between underside of ceiling joists and top of window architraves.

Sometimes beams occur, in which case we should be advised as to the depth (from underside of joists) and width of the beams, and whether of timber or a rolled steel section.

RESPONSIBILITY.—When we have delivered goods on to rail or boat, our responsibility ceases. Any claim for damage occurring in transit should be made against the railway or shipping authorities concerned.

PAYMENT.—To avoid delay and misunderstandings, new clients are advised to furnish business references or else to forward cash, with their first order. In the case of overseas clients, we prefer to forward a draft through our Bank, accompanied by documents.

Steel Borders are supplied in sheets 6ft. long x 2ft. wide; or they may be obtained, to order, in any smaller width.

To indicate the purpose of a steel border, we draw attention to border No. 1406, on page 9 of this Catalogue. It will be seen that a steel border is used to make up irregularities in the size of a room. The design of a steel border permits of cutting without detracting from its appearance; whereas the design of most of our panellings does not permit of effective cutting.

HOW TO FIX METAL CEILINGS

SECTIONS OF CEILINGS SHOWING METHODS OF FIXING.

Wood Brackets

at Joints. ^7.

SECTION No. I.

Diaper Ceiling. Scotia finish.

SECTION No. 3.

Ceiling of Sheet Panelling, with Cornice, Border and Moulding in three separate pieces.

MITRE

LEAVES.

NOTE.—Many of our Cornices and Mouldings are provided with a bead on the edge to go over fillings or border pattern, and so avoid close trimming of the sheet.

The use of separate border and moulding enables the pattern in the ceiling to work out with a full ornament. The border can be cut to make up irregularities in the size of the room.

GENERAL REMARKS.

Where our Metal Ceiling Materials are used, light timbers only are required for ceiling joists.

For fixing, the tools required are:—Hammer, Bradawl, Punch, Pair of Snips, and Saw.

Procedure.—In case of New Buildings having plaster walls a bevelled ground should be fixed, to which is secured the batten for the bottom of cornice; and the walls floated before the Metal Material is fixed. For old Brick Buildings plugs should be inserted and battens fixed thereto.

For the body of the ceiling mark on the ends of the outside joists the distance which the cornice will project from the walls. These marks denote the centre of the Batten carrying the top of cornice

Cornice.—For mitring, allow one length of the Cornice to butt on to the wall, scribing the opposite length to it, covering the joint with a mitre leaf, using a little putty on the edge of the leaf before pressing it into the angle. Then nail to battens and brackets.

Sheeting.—Our sheets are trimmed true, and always lap at the joint. When the Cornice is and the ends of the ceiling sheets. Space out l£in. x I in. Oregon ceiling battens at 12in. centre to centre, starting from centre of the room, if it is desired that the ceiling pattern should be equal at the sides of the room. With many of our smaller pattern diaper sheetings it is sufficient to start with a pattern from one side and end of the room, in which case the battens can be spaced 12in. centre to centre from the centre of the cornice batten. Cut in cross battens to take the ends of metal sheets. Also, on two sides of the room fix trimmers level with under side of joist, to which nail the cornice batten.

Fix wood brackets behind angles and cornice joints. A batten must be fixed under all joints.

FIXING.

fixed, start fixing the sheets from the centre or side of the room, according to the spacing of the battens. To ensure a first-class job, temporarily tack the ceiling sheets in position, ascertaining if the lines are correct before completing the nailing. When all the sheets are nailed home, go over the joints with a small blunt tool, and tuck edges so that they lie close and even.

HOW TO FIX DADOS AND WALL LININGS.

one u:

Dado and Wall Lining Materials are attached to battens fixed to plugs in the wall, or nailed to wood studs, but it is advisable that the lower three feet of the Metal Sheeting be attached to. wood lining boards in lieu of battens. If the ceilings are also to be of metal, they should be fixed first.

Obtain the height of dado, and strike a perfectly horizontal line for top of dado panels, allowing for height of wood skirting.

Now fix the battens for Metal Sheeting in a similar manner as for Ceilings, bearing in mind that it is essential to get an equal amount of the pattern on each side of the room. A batten should be placed under the centre of the sheet,

When all battens are in position, fix dado moulding and angle strips. (See No. 1368, 69, 70.)

Dado Panels and Metal Sheeting should now be fixed. Place the lower bead of the wall sheet along the flange on the dado moulding, and cut the pattern up to the bottom flange of the Cornice. To make a good joint where the sheets are cut against the cornice, an extra flange piece should be used under the Cornice. This piece (No. 1370) should be fixed at the same time as the Cornice.

STEEL ANGLE STRIPS.

WUNDERLICH "HURRICANE” SKYLIGHTS.

No. 1516—Fixed (Unventilated)

For stoclc sizes, see below.

(Made in Galvanised Steel.)

Our "Hurricane" Skylights are constructed very strongly, and will last a lifetime. Being light in weight, thoroughly weatherproof, and easy to fix and glaze, these skylights appeal to the Homebuilder seeking for an inexpensive, yet effective, means of providing light and, maybe, ventilation in the roof. They require no paint nor putty, and breakage of glass is reduced to a minimum, as ample provision is made for expansion and contraction.

No. 1516 Skylight is suited to positions where light only, without ventilation, is desired. It does not open.

No. 1515 Skylight should be used where light is permanently required and ventilation is sometimes a necessity.

No. 1515—Hinged.

For stoclc sizes, see below.

All Skylights are supplied in the following stock sizes, the measurements given being the glass sizes:—

Special sizes can be made readily to order.

All Skylights are supplied unglazed, unless otherwise specified.

Stock Skylights are suitable for a corrugated iron roof, but we can supply them, to order, for other types of roofing.

No. 1379—Hinged (Ventilated). (Also stocked Unhinged.)

Note the special provision, on two sides and bottom, for permanent ventilation.

Our Window Hoods, stamped from Galvanised Steel, are used very extensively, on account of the ease with which they may be assembled and fixed. No. 1330 is supplied in three parts, consisting of two brackets and a fishscale sheet. In the case of No. 1422, a fourth part, viz., the frieze, is provided if so desired. The Window Hoods are fixed by means of screws through lugs which we attach to the brackets. The fishscale sheet is turned up at back to form flashing against the wall; and the front edge is rolled, thus imparting extreme rigidity to the sheet.

Hoods longer than the stock size (viz., 6ft.), may be obtained, to order. Extra charges are made for these, according to the length required.

SHINGLE SHEETING, No. 1504.

Supplied in Galvanised Steel.

This sheeting is suitable for the external walls of buildings, or it may be employed as an ornamental roofing.

Another use, to which it may be put, is in the decoration of gables; or, again, in a treatment under bay windows or in front of balconies.

Utilised in conjunction with wooden supporting brackets and bearers, this shingle sheeting completes an effective window-hood treatment.

In short, this material is a suitable alternative to patterns 189, 751, 190, 1046 and 1045, which are illustrated on page 45 of this catalogue.

DESIGN RATES.

The following Design Rates for complete ceiling treatments, illustrated on pages 6 to 17, will enable clients to calculate readily the total price for similar designs in rooms of any size. It will be noticed that we quote a rate per square yard for the ceiling, exclusive of cornice, and an extra price per lineal foot for the cornice; so permitting our clients to reckon out the alteration in price if a cornice other than that illustrated is desired. The rates per square yard of ceilings, and per lineal foot of cornice, hold good for ceilings of ANY AREA. These Design Rates cover the Wunderlich Metal Material necessary, including sufficient lin. x 16 gauge nails for fixing the metal, and ample material to provide for the waste that is at times involved.

In addition we supply a working drawing, free of charge, showing the correct arrangement of the various patterns in the rooms to be ceiled.
