PURLIN LINE
IDENTIFICATION: NEW DEEP CORRUGATED "DURABESTOS" sheets are readily identified by (I) comparison with the corrugated profile illustrated above, (2) the thickened crowns and valleys of the corrugations, (3) the low underlap corrugation along one edge of the sheet. The latter is designed to ensure accurate and weathertight fitting of the overlapping corrugated sheet using a 3 side lap only (greater side laps are not to be employed) to permit the total width of the sheet to rest snugly on the purlin, to give maximum net cover" of area per sheet, and to enhance the appearance of the roofing and walling when fixed in position.
IMPORTANT: New Deep Corrugated Sheets are unsuitable for use with or for repairing roofs covered with old pattern Deep Corrugated Sheets.

Pitch of Corrugations: 5.50"
Depth of Corrugations: 2"
Side Lap: 3"
Thickness of Sheet (average):
Number of square yards per square (10' x 10’) of Roofing: Approx. 13
Weight: Approx. 26 lbs. per square yard or 340 lbs. per square ( I O' x 10') of Roofing when fixed. Square yards per ton—88. Wood Battens—if used: 3" x 1^"
PITCH AND END LAP: For roof pitch exceeding 20c, where roofing is not exposed to severe climatic conditions, a minimum end lap of 6" may be used. For roofs between 20 and 15 pitch, the end lap must be increased and sealed to conform with our guarantee. Roofing pitched below 15 involves special precautions when fixing, including the sealing of all end laps with plastic asbestos-bitumen compound, as does roofing exposed to severe climatic conditions (driving winds, etc.).
NOTE: The use of corrugated "Durabestos should be avoided where roofs are pitched below 10'.
ROOF STRUCTURE: Advice as to the suitability of roofing designs (timber or steel) will be freely given by our Technical Officers.
SPACING OF PURLINS AND GIRTS: As regulations vary, refer to us for details of correct spacing of purlins, sheet set-outs and the use of wire mesh. Purlins are arranged under each lap, with intermediate purlins or battens (3" x Ij") equally spaced. Employ sheet lengths that involve a minimum number of purlins. True hips and valleys should retain the same sheet layout with purlins or battens maintained on the same horizontal line. Provide trimming members between purlins or battens at each side of hip ridging to support raking edges of sheets and hip capping, centring as for ridging.
GUTTERS: Place gutters in position before commencing the fixing of roofing sheets.
FASTENING: Drill all holes—do not punch—in the crown of corrugations only, approx. nV diam. greater than that of the screw or bolt to be used—normally nV- One galvanised screw (or bolt), one galvanised and one bituminous (felt) washer comprise a set of "fixings." Secure the sheets at each purlin or batten through th# 2nd and 6th corrugation crowns, using galvanised roofing screw* as follows:—
3" x 14 gauge for single thickness of sheet.
3j" x 14 gauge for double or triple thickness of sheet.
4" x 14 gauge for aprons of ridge and hip cappings, etc. Average 5 sets of screws and washers to each sheet.
Seal between felt washer and sheet with plastic asbestos bitumen compound.
NOTE: Except when finishing at gable or hip, the underlap (Io^ ‘ corrugation should not be cut off.
TYPICAL M ITR-E CUTS
WUNDERLICH NEW DEEP CORRUGATED "DURABESTOS’* SHEETS are fixed by the mitre (straight joint) method as shown by illustrations on this and the following page.
"HAND" OF FIXING: To determine the “hand'* of fixing, stand at the gutter looking up the roof slope and refer to the foil owing diagrams, which illustrate:
jwoeaiAp co*»ucation
LEFT TO RIGHT fixing
iNOfcMLAP corrugation
RIGHT TO LEFT FIXING
Briefly, when fixing "left to right' take sheets (smooth side up) with the low or underlap corrugation to the right and make mitre cuts as shown by sketch "A." When fixing 'right to left," reverse the sheets (still with the smooth side up) so that the low or underlap corrugation is to be left, and make mitre cuts as shown by sketch "B."
NOTE: Accessories that are fluted for nesting into the corrugations of the sheets, such as fluted apron flashing, must be of the same "hand" as that adopted when fixing the sheets.
GABLE AND HIP ROOFS: When fixing corrugated "Durabestos" sheets to gable or hip roofs, fixing must be commenced from the same end of the building on both roof slopes, so that fluted ridge capping will fit correctly.
MITRE CUTTING: Corrugated "Durabestos" Sheets are supplied with all four corners square. Mitres are cut on the building site to suit the "hand" of fixing and end lap adopted. Before making mitre cuts it is necessary, therefore, to determine:
I. Whether the sheets are to be fixed "left to right" or "right to left." This decision is generally influenced by the direction of prevailing winds or inclement weather; the side lap should be fixed away from the weather thus:
DIRECTION OF INCLEMENT WEATHER
2. New Deep Corrugated "Durabestos" Sheets are designed for a 3 side lap only (approximately half a corrugation) which ensures close weathertight nesting.
3. End lap—see recommendations on previous page, "P.TCH & END LAP."
When the correct position or angle of the miFre cut has been determined, prepare a template of the mitre for use when
marking off subsequent sheets to be cut. Use a suitable hand
saw for cutting mitres.
