The central concern of this work is the period 164/3 -76 BCE during which Rome and Judaea had a diplomatic and treaty relationship. Emphasis is placed on the initiation of these relationships at the time of Judah Maccabee and their cessation under Alexander Jannai. Reconstruction is attempted of the geopolitical situation in which Rome and Judaea operated and the consequences of their respective understandings of these situations on relations between them.
