A similar study for the years 2005-2009 revealed 41 GPs had been awarded the doctoral degree in that period.AimsTo identify the number and characteristics of those GPs who were awarded a doctorate from an Australian University between 1 Jan 2010 and 31 Dec 2014.MethodSuccessful candidates were identified from University doctoral theses collections, the Trove database, the ROAR database, NHMRC PhD scholarship lists and GP academic department webpages. Personal and professional characteristics were identified from the AHPRA register, and the Medical Directory of Australia. Peer reviewed publications were identified from PubMed database.Results19 GPs were identified who had a doctoral thesis in a University Library. 5 successful candidates had NHMRC scholarship support. There were a proportionate number for rural and remote locations. The median age of the award remains 24 years post initial medical degree Range (11-42 years).ConclusionIf the low rate of doctoral study completion continues, suitable future general practice academic position applicants may be difficult to find. Their research careers will be short unless we attract GP doctoral candidates at an earlier stage in their career.
