Summary An alternative approach to the teaching and learning of spoken English in Korea was investigated to maximise students’ collaborative meaning-making through dialogical inquiry. It was concluded that oral proficiency of foreign language could be facilitated by a learning environment that is oriented to student interaction and is responsive to social and cultural identities of students.
