Summary This thesis examined police-reported Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) incidents and the association between alcohol and illicit drug use and the initiation of criminal violence charges, recidivism, and protection order violation. The findings indicate alcohol and illicit drug use are risk factors in the perpetration of severe and recidivist IPV as well as the efficacy of protection orders.
